Many Homeless after Floods in Mexico by Julieta Brito
Because of massive flooding that has occurred in southern Mexico, thousands have evacuated their destroyed and /or damaged houses. The Mexican military has helped evacuate the people; though the floods have started to recede, some people are still trapped inside of their houses, and many remain homeless. Up to now, there have been reports of five deaths only, but in fact there may be more. Resources are being concentrated in the evacuation centers, but looters have caused difficulties with supplies of water and food. The President of the country has given special powers to soldiers and police to keep the order. He has called on private airlines companies to help with the relief efforts. He said that this flood was “not just the worst natural catastrophe in the state's history but, I would venture to say, one of the worst in the country's recent history.” Beyond the human disaster, oil companies suffered severe losses. The flood was caused by an extremely strong storm that devastated the southern part of the country.
