CIC: The International School of Caracas

Employment at CIC

CIC is an excellent place to teach and learn. We place a premium on finding teachers who have intellectual curiosity, the ability to relate positively to others in the school community, and who commit themselves to teach and learn from other faculty members and students.

Positions for 2008-2009

We are seeking teachers to fill the following positions for the 2008-09 school year:

  • Librarian for Elementary and Secondary School
  • Physical Education Teacher for Elementary

The School

By exploring this website you will find out a great deal about CIC, our faculty, our students and the campus. If you have a specific question, send an email to us at the school office (cic@cic-caracas.org).

Faculty Responsibilities

Our expectation is that all our teachers will become directly involved in the academic and nonacademic life of the school.

Our departments work very hard to continually improve and modify our curriculum. This takes everyone’s commitment to enhance constructive dialogue among colleagues. This commitment is especially important because we are making a concerted effort to adhere to the dictates of the IB Middle Years and IB Diploma Programs in terms of integrating our curriculum across academic disciplines.

Our extracurricular programs run the gamut from athletics to Fine Arts to our Model UN. We expect that every teacher finds a way to make these programs better. Equally as important are the efforts that each of us expends in order to make the school an enjoyable place to be. Our students and faculty find the school to be a warm and nurturing environment. We want to find teachers who can contribute to this environment.

Faculty Qualifications

The school average is nine years teaching experience, with two-thirds holding advanced degrees. The great majority of teachers we hire have at least four years experience and an advanced degree. We will consider those with less, but your experience and recommendations should be exemplary.

Contracts, Salaries, & Benefits

The initial contract is for two years. That said, CIC is looking for people who want to make a 3-6 year commitment to the school. Our faculty turnover tends to be very low, and we believe that is a sign faculty enjoy both the school and this area of the world.

Here are some key facts about the salary and benefits package:

  • Salaries range from $24,000-$44,000.
  • Salaries are paid 80% in US Dollars, 20% in local currency.
  • CIC pays to get you to Caracas and 1/2 of the cost to your home of record after the first year.
  • Beginning at the end of year two, you receive an annual round trip ticket.
  • The Shipping Allowance is $2000 per teacher, covering shipping costs into and out of the country. This allowance changes to $4000 after the third year of service.
  • A Settling-In Allowance of $600 per teacher is paid immediately upon arrival.
  • We offer excellent medical coverage through Liberty Mutual.
  • We provide superior, furnished housing, which teachers are not required to share.

Although the cost of living in Caracas is about 15% higher than the US, most expatriate teachers find that they are able to travel quite a bit and still save at least $12,000 per year from a single salary.

Recruiting Procedure

Send an email directly to the superintendent: bensona@ciccaracas.com.ve. Include a cover letter describing your experience and what you teach best, your CV, and a list of references.

The CIC Superintendent, Alan Benson, and the Assistant Superintendent, Carmen Sweeting, attend various recruiting fairs. In recent years, they have interviewed applicants at the Search Associates fairs in Cambridge and Toronto, the AASSA fair in December, and the AAIE conference. Candidates can also arrange interviews outside of the formal recruiting fairs.

If you are new to overseas teaching we recommend that you work through one of the big recruiting agencies. International Schools Services, Search Associates, and Queens University all provide information and assistance to candidates for overseas positions.
