Philosophy:

Recognizing that mathematics is the abstraction of logical relationships, the focus of teaching at CIC is to give each student the ability to use logic, together with factual knowledge, to solve problems they encounter. To this end, teaching emphasizes making connections to prior knowledge, examining examples and counter-examples, and drawing from a wealth of applications presented in projects, field trips, computer programs and internet research. We believe that real learning means that a student is able to follow the inherent logic that is the underpinning of mathematics.

The mathematics department contributes greatly to achieving the school's goals. The mathematics staff in the CIC Secondary School is comprised of well qualified and experienced teachers who have also demonstrated a high level of concern for each student's academic and emotional well being. This is fulfilled by a curriculum designed to advance more capable students while also providing extra support for students on a long or short-term basis. This ensures that each student is appropriately challenged to achieve to his/her own top standard. All teachers participate in summer and in-school workshops, college courses, in-service or professional conferences that keep them aware of current research and practices.

Instruction involves a variety of approaches. Group work helps to develop leadership and cooperation among students and creates a setting where the diverse cultures of our community are valued. Use of technology also has become an integral part of teaching mathematics at CIC. The ability to efficiently use computers, calculators and the internet is fundamental to preparing students to be able to function mathematically in their world. Projects and open-ended problems are embedded in the curriculum and encourage students to explore a variety of problem-solving strategies that transfer to situations beyond the mathematics classroom.
