CIC Academics

CIC is an academic community which challenges and nurtures students. We strive to foster a love of learning in students, educating them to be effective communicators, critical thinkers and problem solvers.

We offer a proven American-style, international curriculum from PreNursery to Grade 5 and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program to Grades 6-10. The IBMYP leads students into the IB Diploma Program for Grades 11 & 12, which we have been offering for about twenty years.

In addition to the core curriculum, the Elementary and Secondary Schools both offer courses in Technology, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Spanish (as a native and modern languages). Secondary School students have additional language options as well. Students who are non-native English speakers and need extra assistance are served by our extremely well-qualified ESOL teachers. CIC accepts students up to Grade 8 without prior English language instruction.

CIC places students in some of the finest universities around the world through our comprehensive college preparatory program which includes the full IB program and the opportunity for AP Exams. CIC students who are fluent in Spanish are also eligible for entrance into Venezuelan universities through the Revalidas process.

The CIC Elementary School is filled with fun and laughter, and, most of all, learning. Our students participate in a wide range of activities and we are certainly proud of all their efforts. CIC children continue to strive to be their best, whether it is in the classroom, the soccer field, the dance studio or art room. Inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and open-minded are just some of the attributes our students display on a regular basis. Showing that they care, take risks, reflect, are knowledgeable, balanced, and principled are among other IB Learner Profile attributes our students aim to display in their everyday lives.

Our students, many of whom will become the leaders of tomorrow, come from nearly fifteen different countries. Families at CIC are part of the international business community, the diplomatic community, or other communities located in Caracas. English is the language of instruction and the language generally used by students. Our inquiry-based approach follows US standards: as we are accredited by AdvancED, a US-based accrediting organization.

Our curriculum includes language arts, math, science, humanities, physical education, music, art, technology, and library studies. Our program is further enriched by our on-site sensory-motor integration specialist, English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Modern Language Department.

The Elementary School has morning assemblies on Monday and Friday of each week. During these assemblies, new students are introduced and welcomed, birthdays are recognized, different countries represented in the Elementary School community are celebrated. Venezuela is also celebrated through presentations that highlight the beauty of this country. We also recognize those students that have been ‘spotted’ on campus each week exhibiting the IB Learner Profile attributes.

The CIC Elementary School teachers and staff work to be the best they can be, and we all look forward to seeing the smiling faces of our students each and every day. Our open and friendly campus invites our community members to become involved with the school and enjoy the facilities. We provide a warm, caring, and secure environment for our student learners and we welcome parents and families to actively participate.

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to an excellent year in Secondary school. Your child will receive optimal benefit from the year if you as a parent remain actively involved with his/her classes and school activities. How can you do this?

  1. Check your child’s grades on a regular basis by using our Power School system. All grades will be updated each Friday so that you should be able to see how well your child is doing.
  2. Get to know your child’s advisor. A link describing the advisor system is part of this website. Each student has a faculty advisor who will know your child and be familiar with his/her academic and social life at school. A list of advisors is part of the advisor link.
  3. Take the time to attend any event where your child is a participant.
  4. Take the time to attend any meetings about your child or his/her course of study.

SS Parent-Student Handbook and ES Parent-Student Handbook – Both handbook’s latest versions have been updated for the year 2019.

School Calendar – Will be kept on our school’s website, and also, if you have a CIC email account, you can check our online calendar in Google CIC.

Uniforms – Our rules are simple, but please make sure that your child adheres to these rules. Any student who does not conform to these will not be allowed in class until the correct uniform is brought to him/her.

Activities – Our school has a wealth of after-school activities. Educational research and our experience tell us that students benefit from becoming involved outside of the classroom. One’s skill or training in an activity is not a barrier. Just have the student give it a try.

  1. How can I contact my child’s teacher? Leave a phone message with Liseth Patino at the school. You can also send an email to the teacher by using alma.
  2. Who is my child’s advisor? Each advisor will be sending you an introductory letter within the first week of school. Call the Secondary School Secretary (ext. 225) if you have forgotten the teacher’s name.
  3. Who should I speak with if I think that there is a problem in one of my children’s classes? First, speak with the teacher. If this does not seem to solve the problem, speak with Brian Lettinga on Middle and Elementary School.

Upcoming Activities

Various meetings for parents- please check the first page of the website. We will meet with the parents of the 11/12 graders to talk about the IB program. In addition, we will have informal cocktail parties for the parents of the N-5 and 6-12th graders.

CIC has offered the IB Diploma Program in Grades 11 & 12 for approximately twenty years and was the first school in Venezuela to implement the IB Middle Years Program for Grades 6-10. The IB Programs are rigorous, world-renowned curricula, which promote very high academic standards and responsible citizenship in an increasingly global society. IB Middle Years Program (MYP)

Grades 6-10
The IB’s Middle Years Program (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 years. The five-year program offers an educational approach that embraces yet transcends traditional school subjects. Students at this stage–early puberty to mid-adolescence–are in a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. This is a time of uncertainty, sensitivity, resistance, and questioning. The IBMYP provides them with discipline, skills and challenging standards, but also with creativity and flexibility. The IBO builds its program around these considerations but it is also concerned that students develop a personal value system by which to guide their own lives, as thoughtful members of local communities and the larger world. IB Diploma Program

Grades 11 & 12
The IBO’s Diploma Program, created in 1968, is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations. It is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19. The program has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the worlds leading universities. The Diploma Programs grading system is criterion-referenced: each students performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement consistent from one examination session to the next. The IBO has shown, over the course of 30 years, that students are well prepared for university work. The IB Diploma Program Coordinator is Mr. Michael East.
